The Young Philosopher.

SKU: 11422

Edited with Introduction by Elizabeth Kraft. Charlotte Smith [1749-1806] published this novel, a satire on lawyers, who caused her much grief, in 1798. Medora Glenmorris and her mother Laura recount their stories to Medora's love George Delmont, the philosopher of the title. The ineptitude of the legal system to deal with corruption, especially in its treatment of women, is revealed. The stories are interesting. Smith seems to share Wollstonecraft's passion for women's rights, and Austen's skepticism  and enjoyment of Gothic novels. Still wrapped in publisher's plastic. University of Kentucky Press. 1999.
